Wound Care

The Wound Management Program

Wound care has become one of the most expensive areas of home care services and one of the highest users of home visits. It is important that home care clinicians have a good understanding of wound care, the healing process, products and product usage, as well as appropriate care and treatment modalities.

At Novel Home Health Agency, our wound care program provides a multidisciplinary approach that combines the skills of RN/ ET nurses, physical therapists, and dieticians as needed. Our specialty RNs have experience with comprehensive wound assessments and wound care using the latest wound care techniques such as Wound V.A.C. therapy and Anodyne therapy. The V.A.C technique was developed by Kinetic Concepts Inc (KCI).

The Wound V.A.C.® (Vacuum Assisted Closure™) therapy technique assists in wound closure by applying localized negative (sub-atmospheric) pressure to help promote wound healing. Vacuum pressure is applied to a special dressing positioned in the wound cavity or over a flap or graft. This pressure-distributing wound packing helps remove fluids from the wound and promote the normal healing process.

The V.A.C. Therapy Helps to:

  • Promote granulation tissue formation through the promotion of wound healing.
  • Uniformly draw wounds closed by applying controlled, localized negative pressure.
  • Remove interstitial fluid allowing tissue decompression.
  • Remove infectious materials.
  • Provide a closed, moist wound healing environment.

This V.A.C. technique is indicated especially for patients with:

  • Chronic open wounds (diabetic ulcers and stage 3 & 4 pressure ulcers)
  • Acute and traumatic wounds
  • Flaps and grafts
  • Subacute wounds
  • Dehisced wounds
  • Partial thickness burns

In general our wound care management program includes the following:

  • Specialized care to patients with skin and wound problems
  • Care is provided/managed by wound care certified RNs
  • The program utilizes clinical pathways/DSM protocols as necessary
  • Care is comprehensive and individualized
